A few quick tips for selecting a backpack.
When your camping trip requires you to carry your camping gear on your back, you need to make sure you have a backpack that will do the job effectively. Even if you're camping out of your car and doing day trips, you'll want the right backpack. Here are a few quick tips:
- For overnight trips or for carrying heavy loads, make sure you have a backpack with additional support features that "suspend" the load, or shift it off the shoulders and onto the stronger lumbar (lower) area of the back. These are called suspension packs. Suspension features range from the simple with waist belt & shoulder strap combinations to the complex, with stiff internal frames and adjustable shoulder strap length. A terrific internal frame backpack for a longer adventure (4 days and more) is the Jansport Endeavor 8000 Pro backpack. The Endeavor got an excellent review and recommendation from Backpacker Magazine in their March 2006 issue. There is also an Endeavor 8000 Pro just for women. A really good internal frame backpack for shorter adventures (3 days and less) is the Kelty Illusion 3500. Backpacker Magazine calls it the "Best Buy" for weekned backpacks.
- If you are out for a day hike, here are some features you'll want to consider:
moisture-wicking back panels, water bottle holders or internal sleeves for water reservoirs, and extra lashing points on the exterior of the bag for attaching additional gear or accessories. Nalgene backpacks are an excellent choice.
- Backpacks being used as book bags are another story. A bag with plenty of space is essential. For many of today's college students a compartment for a laptop computer is a huge plus. By the way, don't hang your bag off one shoulder - please use both straps. A couple of great recommendations are Outdoor Products. and KELTY. However, the number one name in school backpacks is the Jansport line of backpacks. Not only is Jansport a very popular name in backpacks, they are also very well made with loads so great features.
